Few musical things are as scary and humbling to me as being the solo opening act for a show. No big volume. No far-more-talented mates to hide your flaws. No wizards to flesh out your songs and grab the attention of a crowd that’s never heard of you. I wrote this to serve as an audience icebreaker for my solo slots, and to shed light on the hurdles for the first-up sacrificial lambs at many a concert. I’ve never understood how the first people to not get paid at a music venue are the folks making the music. Do restaurants stiff the chef on a slow night? -- MJ
